“Hey, man, I didn"t know. I thought she worked alone. I didn"t

know about you or your interest in the girls, but I think I can make this

worth your while, especially if you can get us more girls.”

I knew we were in. I let Gary call a couple of guys and we set up

a meeting for the next day. I brought another detective with me—Kathy

Devito, a woman who"d been working undercover in vice and could

handle this crowd. I introduced her as my girlfriend, said she was great

at bringing in young girls because they trusted her.

Over the next couple of days, we had a few meetings with Gary

and some of the guys in his operation. We had teams set up, tailing

every guy who left our meetings, hoping they"d make their way back to

the girls. They told me how much they"d pay and showed me pictures

of some of their girls to give me an idea of what they wanted. Every

girl looked so young, and in the pictures, they were bruised, dirty, and

terrified. It made my skin crawl.

I told them we could get some girls and I listened carefully to

their side conversations. That"s how I realized they were holding the

girls nearby. The good news was that they hadn"t sold them yet. The

bad news was that I wasn"t sure about the baby.

When I came home at night after those meetings, after seeing

those pictures, after hearing about the girls, I got into the shower and

scrubbed myself raw to get the scent of my day and every part of them

off of me. The last thing I wanted was to bring any part of it into our

home, into our bed. I couldn"t expose Nate to that kind of sick,

depraved life.

We"d reached a point where we were just waiting for Gary and

his friends to come up with the money. Then, on Sunday morning, I got

a text from Kathy saying we were on. I hated leaving Nate. I could tell

he was disappointed. He"d actually managed to get a whole day off of

work and we"d planned on us spending it together. We"d hardly seen

each other over the past week. I kissed him and apologized. I thought

we"d get through things quickly. It didn"t work out that way.

It turned out there was an issue with the place they were holding

the girls, so Gary and his crew were late meeting us. On the plus side,

when they arrived, they were still pissed about whatever had happened,

so they were talking to each other pretty freely about the new location.
